Managing Your Stress With Kundalini Yoga

Nowadays, there are all kinds of ads for yoga classes all over the place. In Los Angeles, there is practically a yoga studio on just about every corner. New York City is a little behind, but is catching up very quickly.

There is Hot Yoga, Dhana Yoga, Power Yoga, Flow Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Cardio Yoga, Vinyasa/Vinyasa Flow Yoga. You may have asked yourself “What do all these names mean?” “What kind of yoga class or workshop should I take?” In many ways I feel that yoga has become more of a business, rather than its original intent: a practice to unify mind, body and spirit. However, that is not to say that a yoga school or teacher shouldn’t earn a good living.

Within the different choices, some methods focus only on the body through physical exercise, leaving out meditation and mantra (chanting). Other methods use mantra and meditation without breathing exercises (pranayama). With all these choices, why not go for the “Original Power Yoga” Kundalini Yoga.

Kundalini Yoga is powerful and inclusive. It consists of postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), hand and finger positions (mudras), body locks (bandas), chanting (mantras), and meditation. These are done together or in different combinations to produce specific effects.

Kundalini Yoga is a codified system of sets, or a group of specific exercises known as a Kriya. None of the exercises in a Kundalini Yoga class are arbitrary or thrown together. There a literally thousands of sets and kriyas, each aimed at achieving a specific effect in the body, mind and spirit.

Because of this combination of exercises, Kundalini Yoga works faster in producing effects than other schools of yoga. It has been said to work up to 16 times faster. Kundalini Yoga is not as posture (asana) oriented as some other schools of yoga, so there is less difficulty in the postures, making it safe for home practice and for people who are concerned about their level of flexibility.

The word yoga means “union.” It is a union of body, mind and spirit. While you are thinking about what class to take, why not take the class that works your body, mind and spirit? A Kundalini Yoga practice can produce a healthy, happy and harmonious lifestyle.
